The Highland Gathering and Atholl Highlanders' Parade 29 and 30 May 2010
The Highland Gathering and Atholl Highlanders' Parade takes place on the Bank Holiday weekend at the end of May every year. This unrivalled spectacle gives locals and visitors alike the chance to participate in a unique Highland tradition that has persisted for generations.
The Atholl Highlanders' Parade
Saturday is Parade day, when the Atholl Highlanders, Europe's last remaining private army, parade in full dress uniform. Led by their stirring pipes and drums, the Highlanders march ceremoniously onto the forecourt of Blair Castle, where they then await inspection by His Grace the Duke of Atholl, their Colonel.
Beginning at 2.30pm and continuing for about an hour, the Highlanders' Parade is a truly memorable experience for everyone involved, harking back to Scotland's rich cultural heritage with flair, spectacle and pride.
For Scots and guests alike, the Atholl Highlanders' Parade, full of magnificent sound and atmosphere, stirs the blood and reminds you of why the Highlanders of old provoked such fear and respect among their enemies.
The Highland Gathering and Highland Games
The Highland Gathering takes place on the Sunday, with the Atholl Highlanders officially opening the Highland Games with a "March On" before His Grace the Duke of Atholl, led again by the skirl of their pipes and the deep, sonorous booming of their drums.
Following the March On, heavyweight strong men from around the world take centre stage to battle it out in the Highland Games, which includes traditional events such as tossing the caber, putting the shot and throwing the hammer. Highland Games date back many centuries, with most of the events tracing their roots back to ancient Scottish battle weapons and fighting techniques.
A tug o' war, races, Highland dancing and solo piping competitions also take place throughout the day, recreating the atmosphere of the original Highland Games, which is what the Highland Gathering is all about.
Trade stands, catering outlets and a beer tent are on site. Tickets are available on the gate. Gate and trade stand prices for 2010 will be available shortly.
